Abstract

This article examines essentialist tendencies in contemporary popular and clinical psychology through the frameworks of developmental psychology, the philosophy of freedom, and clinical practice. The arguments presented do not diminish responsibility for inflicting pain on others nor justify harmful behaviors, but insist on understanding the genesis of such behaviors as a necessary precondition for their overcoming.
