Sažetak

Tourist brochures, which serve the dual communicative purpose of informing and persuading readers, rely extensively on metadiscourse. Early analyses of metadiscourse were conducted in the context of academic discourse, where its significance was first established (Hyland 1998a; 1998b; Vande Kopple 1985). More recently, research has expanded to other types of discourse, including tourism (Dafouz-Milne 2008; Mauranen 1993; Fuertes-Olivera et al. 2001; Dafouz Milne 2003) and other languages except English. However, in terms of metadiscourse, Croatian remains underresearched (Balažić Bulc and Požgaj Hadži 2018; Pon and Petrić 2023). This study focuses specifically on the use of boosters, which play a crucial role in persuasion and engagement with the reader but remain underexplored, particularly in languages of lesser diffusion such as Croatian. The research forms part of a doctoral  research on metadiscourse in English and Croatian tourist brochures and their English translations. This study aims to examine the  use and translation of boosters in a self-compiled Tourist Corpus in order to identify cross-linguistic differences and determine  whether English translations of Croatian brochures follow Croatian usage patterns or align with English tourist discourse norms. Findings indicate considerable cross-linguistic differences in the use of boosters. However, English translations of Croatian  brochures tend to mirror Croatian usage more closely than the norms of English tourist discourse, which may influence how such  brochures are received by international audiences.
