Ancient Greek Verbal Valency – Sentence Structure Behind Number

Sažetak
The aim of this research is to describe, in the corpus of select ancient Greek texts, obligatory complements of ancient Greek verbs, and to annotate them numerically in the form of verbal valency with the goal of studying ancient Greek sentence structure in its minimal form of nuclear predication.
Tenets of dependency and functional grammar by Tesnière and Dik, primarily those relating to dependency relations as basic relations at sentence level, and those relating to predicate as a starting point from which sentence structure grows, provide theoretical foundations for the investigation. Obligatory complements are classified by category, function, and form with the goal of covering the maximum of diversity in which they appear in texts. Theoretical distinctions are modelled into a schema for verbal valency annotations, in analogue and digital format. Also, the corpus for this research was created as an example of reuse and building upon previously created digital resources.
The practical part of the investigation is executed with the help of an application created to annotate verbal valency by hand. The expected results, stored in XML format, are examined, analysed, and interpreted in terms of their relevance for the ancient Greek sentence structure.
The research is contextualized among already existing digital databases of ancient Greek verbal valency. This proves to be a scientifically justified, dynamic and relevant domain of interest. Given that the investigation continues to its next phase, it is expected that we will demonstrate that modern approaches to ancient Greek sentence syntax and descriptions of sentence structure may supersede in quality traditional explanations of school grammars. The research also hopes to provide an example of how to formulate and conduct a digital investigation of a “dead” language such as ancient Greek.
