Sažetak
Mary of Magdala, the most important female figure in the immediate circle of Jesus’s disciples, is portrayed as the first witness to Christ’s resurrection and the apostle to the apostles in the early Christian writings and canonical gospels. In the following centuries, however, she was reduced to a figure of repentant sinner and has continued to be presented in this archetypical role in literature, visual arts, and film, until present day. This paper aims to explore the grounds for transformation of Mary Magdalene figure in the medieval Croatian Glagolitic sources, primarily in liturgical books (missals and breviaries). The research will show that Mary Magdalene featured, next to Jesus’s mother Mary, as the most popular biblical female character in the European Middle Ages, and thus also in the Croatian Glagolitic sources. This makes her figure important for understanding the Glagolitic culture, as well as female biblical characters and their role in women’s history, which has so far remained on the margins of research. The issues raised regarding Mary Magdalene, particularly by feminist theology, inevitably involve collective memory and the ways of memorising biblical characters in literature and art, as well as the position of women in society, especially in the Church from early Christianity to present day.
