The Arboreal Motif in Italian-Language Epic and Epic-Lyric Poetry by Dalmatian Authors in the Nineteenth Century

This paper aims to analyse the arboreal motif in epic and epic-lyric poetry in the Italian language by Dalmatian authors in the 19th century and to contribute to the understanding of the transformation of descriptive practices in the epic poetry of the century. In the transition from classical epic, characterised by broad and analytical descriptions, to a poetics based on shorter and more selective images, description does not lose its function. It in fact continues to play a structural role within an increasingly lyricised narration. In this context, the motif of the tree does not function solely as a figurative or ornamental element of the real or imaginary landscape but contributes to the construction of narrative space and guides the interpretation of the text. The adopted methodology is based on a textual and comparative analysis of works by Niccolo Ivellio, Niccolo Giaxich, Giovanni Bizzarro and Anna Vidovich, with particular attention to arboreal images and their symbolic meaning. The analysis shows how the choice of individual arboreal species allows the authors to evoke the natural and cultural landscape of Dalmatia and to concentrate mythological, historical, political, religious and autobiographical meanings. In the works of Ivellio and Giaxich the arboreal motif is linked above all to the representation of political power and the idea of peace. In the work of Bizzarro it is placed within a biblical and religious context and renders the sacred dimension of the narrative more concrete, while in the work of Vidovich it becomes a central part of mythic construction and personal memory. Through simple and recognisable descriptive frames, these authors relate nature, history and memory and develop a form of narration that is more concise and closer to individual experience.
