Abstract

This article offers a comparative analysis of visual representations of Dalmatia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries through three distinct perspectives, characterized here as the Western (Thomas Graham Jackson), the imperial (Die österreichisch-ungarische Monarchie in Wort und Bild, the “Kronprinzenwerk”), and the Slavic (Ludvík Kuba). While scholarship on travel narratives has predominantly focused on text, this study foregrounds the significance of images as distinct visual counterparts in the production of spatial meaning. By comparing Jackson’s individual scholarly corpus, the editorially structured Kronprinzenwerk, and Kuba’s authorial ethnographic practice, the article examines how distinct conditions of image-making shape the representations of Dalmatia. Each corpus develops a distinct mode of seeing, anchored in specific epistemological and ideological logics. By placing emphasis on Kuba’s Dalmatian visual work, the article also positions him more firmly as a maker of travel images, alongside his ethnomusicological contribution.
