Artificial intelligence in speech and language therapy: benefits and potential risks

Abstract

The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in speech and language therapy is playing an increasingly important role in contemporary rehabilitation practice. The aim of this paper is to present, through a narrative review of the available literature, the possibilities and limitations of applying artificial intelligence in speech and language therapy, with an emphasis on robot-assisted therapy, mobile applications, large language models, and specialised artificial intelligence systems. A narrative literature review was conducted by searching relevant scientific databases. The results indicate considerable potential for therapy personalisation, increased accessibility of services, and more objective monitoring of progress, but also the presence of technical limitations and ethical challenges. In conclusion, artificial intelligence may currently be regarded as a supplementary tool in speech and language therapy practice, subject to essential professional supervision.
