The State Against the Catholic Press in Slovenia in 1945

Sažetak
The article shows the attitude of the communist authorities towards the Catholic press in Slovenia in 1945. Restricting the thoughts of dissenters was nothing new for the Catholic dignitaries, as they themselves were advocates of banning undesirable thoughts. With the political change in 1945, however, the tide in the fight against dissent turned in the opposite direction, and the main target of the new authorities became institutions that had previously disseminated Christian ideas. In 1945, numerous books by Catholic intellectuals were placed on the list of banned books. This applied in particular to works by authors who had emigrated to Western countries after the end of the war or who, in the opinion of the new authorities, had collaborated too closely with the occupying powers during the war. In the trial against executives in printing houses and publishing houses, including two important Catholic printing houses, were confiscated in court proceedings. The management of the oldest Slovenian publishing house, the Society of St. Hermagoras, which was the only Catholic publishing house still permitted, had to submit to changes that allowed the authorities to interfere in its activities. The management of the printing house, which before the war had been in the hands of the management of the Society of St. Hermagoras, was taken over by the Communists, who were thus able to decide on the printed matter of the only remaining Catholic publishing house. All this together brought the reach of the Catholic press in Slovenia to its lowest level in recent centuries
