Abstract
The aim of this work is to investigate the organizational structure of local self-government units, their competences, as well as the mechanisms of cooperation with citizens in modern management conditions. Therefore, this area represents one of the key drivers of democratic processes at the level of local self-government units, because through its competences, local government acts as a service for citizens, enabling more efficient identification and resolution of problems that directly affect the quality of life at the local level. Earlier experiences and literature in Bosnia and Herzegovina do not cover a long period of time, so the development of participatory practices is a relatively new phenomenon. Only by introducing democratic processes, strengthening the institutional framework and establishing civil society organizations, as well as through the exchange of good practices, citizens become more aware of the importance of active participation and organizing in the local community. Therefore, for Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as for most countries in the region, this issue is still insufficiently researched, but at the same time increasingly important in the context of strengthening democratic governance and participatory democracy. Nevertheless, the number of positive and successful examples is increasing year by year, which confirms that the efficient exercise of local self-government responsibilities can contribute to the improvement of local development and increase the participation of citizens in decision-making processes.
