Abstract

Elite sport is often presented as a domain of excellence, yet career disruptions reveal the fragility of meaning when it is reduced to results or to a single identity role. This paper develops the NANS model (Intention, Authenticity, Control, Self-transcendence) through conceptual analysis and a selective philosophical synthesis of Frankl’s noodynamics, existential role analysis, the Stoic dichotomy of control, and the view of sport as a practice with internal goods. Its central claim is that meaning becomes more resilient when it is grounded in process standards, aligned with personal values, focused on what can be governed, and integrated into a broader life narrative. The paper also examines career transitions, risks of a crisis of meaning, practical implications, and possibilities for operationalising the model.
