An Exploratory Study of Understandings of Culture in Croatia

Sažetak
The article presents the results of an exploratory study of understandings of culture in Croatia, conducted in 2020 on a convenience sample of 162 participants born between 1942 and 2002. By applying different sampling techniques, a satisfactory degree of heterogeneity was achieved, especially in terms of age. The survey was conducted online, with open-ended responses from participants to questions that sought to find out: (1) what first comes to mind when the word culture is mentioned, (2) what is personally important to them in culture, (3) how their culture differs from other people’s culture, and (4) how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the practice and experience of culture in their everyday lives. The data collected were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. The results indicate that participants, particularly older ones, understand culture through concepts related to art and the institutions that enable its reception, as well as through the development of the person and polite behaviour, with a high value put on tolerance and inclusiveness. However, there are also responses that see culture as the common characteristics of a certain group of people, and, especially among the youngest participants, as the traditions and customs of a nation. Finally, some responses value personal well-being that participation in culture enables. The method of an exploratory online qualitative survey with participants active in culture and engaged when providing responses proves to be a potentially important and sufficient basis for initiating discussions on cultural policy measures.
