Sažetak

The aim of the analyses presented in this article was to investigate gender differences in cultural participation and musical tastes in Croatia. In contrast to previous analyses on non-probabilistic samples, here we used data collected at the end of 2017 and beginning of 2018 through a survey on a nationally representative sample (N = 1,210). The article presents multinomial regression analyses of participation and taste according to sociodemographic variables. This is followed by analyses of gender differences within predictors and by a series of logistic regressions on subsamples of men and women. The measures used included indicators of high, popular and everyday culture. Regression models show significant gender effects only when it comes to participation, but not when it comes to taste. However, analyses within the predictors indicate that gender modifies the influence of each of the other examined variables: age, education, occupation and place of residence. Based on the analyses carried out, it can be concluded that women in Croatia, especially those with higher education, have a somewhat wider repertoire of cultural consumption and musical tastes than men, and that they participate in high culture more than men do. On the other hand, men’s cultural consumption and musical tastes are more clearly oriented towards male-identified popular culture. When it comes to non-participation, the gender divide is noticeable in big cities and in the countryside. In both cases, non-participants are dominantly women. In the case of everyday cultural participation, men are overrepresented in big cities, and women in the countryside.
