Abstract
Large dam vibrations will be assessed by using a sensor network as part of the proposed protocol. The other main components of the proposed protocol are dual-threshold selective reporting and structurally-based clustering methods which provide for nodes to report only vibration readings that have deviated from what is normal operationally; all vibration readings need not be reported. The communication overhead associated with this protocol is reduced through local filtering. Furthermore, the selection of cluster heads in this protocol is based on a probabilistic weighted function of the remaining node power, which distributes power consumption among the various structural components of the dam. This protocol was simulated using a first-order radio energy consumption model, employing 500 spatially distributed sensors over 4000 monitoring cycles. Simulation-based comparisons between the proposed protocol and two existing protocols, LEACH and TEEN, demonstrated that the proposed protocol extends network life time by more than 120% compared to LEACH and TEEN, reduces the number of transmitted packets by more than 60%, and provides a significantly lower response time for detecting anomalous vibration activity than both. The simulation data indicate that the protocol proposed in this study is an efficient and robust method for monitoring vibration phenomena originating from distributed sources across dams, with a rapid response time for detecting anomalies.
