Abstract

The problem of the intensity of reading activity, the development of reading culture among junior schoolchildren, and the formation of competent readers receives particular relevance in the conditions of distance learning. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and quarantine restrictions, distance or blended education is now common in many countries around the world. The article highlights the main aspects of the problem of developing the reading culture of primary school students and identifies the didactic conditions for its solution during distance learning. Based on the observation of the modern education process and the analysis of the results of a survey of 112 primary school teachers in Ukrainian schools, it was determined that teachers do not often use digital tools in teaching students to read literature. 52% of the respondents prefer the traditional methodological model of developing reading skills, expanding the reading range, improving literary skills, fostering reading independence and reading interest, and encouraging creative activity based on reading, while 12% of teachers practice and consider effective those methods and forms of working with students that involve the active use of digital technologies. The paper offers a review of effective digital means, forms and methods of developing the reading culture of junior schoolchildren in the conditions of distance learning.
