On the significance of the right to information in environmental governance and the protection of human rights
Petar Bačić
Sažetak
The re-actualisation of asbestos pollution in Vranjic near Split is a clear illustration that the degradation of the environment begins with a breach of human rights – the right to be made public and be informed. In this paper, the author emphasises that inadequate information and transactional costs linked to environmental rights are great difficulties of modern society. Due to lack of information and the uncertainty which is linked to numerous problems in the governance of natural resources and various forms of pollution, changes in this area represent a special opportunity in the area of environmental protection and increased human rights. Those changes are part of global tendencies, but the problems which burden environmental governance are particularly expressed in transitional societies which also include the Republic of Croatia.
