Phytosociological and syntaxonomical characte-ristics of Sesleria sadleriana Janka in Croatia

Sesleria sadleriana Janka (= S. coerulea subsp. sadleriana (Janka) Jogan) is the endemic Pannonian species growing in Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia (Janchen 1963, Meusel et al. 1965, Soó 1971, Strgar 1980, Ilijanić and Topić 2000, Jogan 2002). In phytosociological and syntaxonomic respects, S. sadleriana builds two associations – the ass. Seslerietum budensis Soó ex Zolyomi (1936), and the ass. Diantho lumnitzeri-Seslerietum sadleranae Niklfeld (1964).
From the phytosociological view, the grassland stands of S. sadleriana in Croatia were studied first by Regula-Bevilacqua (1978) on Strahinjščica mountain, and she described them as a distinct association "Seslerietum sadleranae Regula-Bevilacqua", which is a younger synonym for the much earlier described Seslerietum budensis Ass. (=Seslerietum sadlerianae).
Seslerietum budensis was studied more in detail on Stahinjščica and Ivančica in Hrvatsko zagorje, and within this association a distinct subassociation genistetosum januensis Regula-Bevilaqua, subass. nov. was separated. It is of a relatively poor floristic composition and grows on the steep dolomite slopes. As differential species of this subassociation, the species Genista januensis, Laserpitium siler and Leontodon incanus are indicated.
The association itself generally is of a relatively poor and very heterogeneous floristic composition, and it grows on the steep dolomite slopes too. In terms of syntaxonomy, it is assigned to the Diantho lumnitzeri-Seslerion albicantis alliance, the Stipo pulcherrimae-Festucetalia pallentis order and the Festuco-Brometea class.
