Sažetak

This research on the expectations of adolescents with experiences as displaced persons and refugees is part of a broader study conducted as part of a doctoral dissertation (Urbanc, 1999). The objectives of the research presented here are to establish the socioeconomic status of the respondents’ families and the differences that exist when assessing this status in adolescents who belong to a general population of secondary-school students and adolescents with the experience of displaced persons or refugees. We were also interested in whether there were any statistically significant differences in future expectations between these two groups of adolescents. The research involved a total of 564 students in the final years of Zagreb secondary schools, of whom 277 students were from a regular secondary-school population, and 287 had the status of displaced persons or refugees. The study shows that the very teenagers who lived in unfavourable, risky conditions of life as a result of their previous experience as displaced persons and refugees and because of their generally lower socioeconomic family status had a more positive perception of their own future and had greater expectations for themselves in the future. The results are explained as part of an ecological multi-system perspective (Fraser, 1997).
