Abstract

Canon Dr Andrija Jagatić was a priest of the Archdioceses of Zagreb and Vrhbosna who devoted his life to the advancement of the spiritual life and education of the Croatian catholic populace in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the second half of the nineteenth century. His endeavors in enlightening the populace such as opening schools, writing numerous spiritual handbooks and conscientiously tending to his demanding ministerial duties, which entailed editorial responsibilities at the Zagreb-based catholic journal Katolički list and the position of the canon of the cathedral chapter of Vrhbosna, earned him the trust of the then-influential clerical and non-clerical circles of the Church in Zagreb and Sarajevo and contributed to his charisma. That enabled him to implement significant social initiatives in specific socio-economic conditions of his time.
