Abstract

Morphological differentiation of mycelial biomass in biosynthesis of ergot alkaloids in submerged culture of fungi of the genus Claviceps has an important role in achieving maximal quantity of the product. Therefore, the type and manner of aggregation of hyphae in mycelia in submerged cultivation of C. paspali strain F-2057 have been tested in various nutritive media.
It has been found that maximal biosynthesis of alkaloids is achieved with synnematic pellets of C. paspali, having the nucleus with hyphae aggregated in the so-called sclerotial structure. Pellets of loose structure, without a firm nucleus, as well as pellets of compact structure have a considerably lesser ability for alkaloid biosynthesis.
The achievement of the synnematic structure of pellets is related to the composition of the nutritive medium, and the way of cultivation of vegetative inoculum.
