Abstract
Research reports the use of many tools in order to study social representations within the structural approach. In this study, we focus on the questionnaire of characterization. It constitutes an interesting way to determine central elements of a representation by inducing a selection of the most and least characteristic words related to an object. The innovative approach of our research is based on the application of a hierarchical clustering method in order to analyse data coming from the questionnaire of characterization. We are interested in differences existing in drivers’ representations of speed limits, more specifically considering the 30 km/h. This new and growing public policy of urban mobility in Europe insures many aspects related to safety and quality of life. Results confirm the existence of different representations of the 30 km/h. The clustering method shows that these representations seem to be linked to a higher level of social thinking construction: thêmata. In the population, we highlight the existence of a representation oriented towards prosocial aspects of the public policy and a representation oriented towards the disadvantages of the measure. The discussion puts in relationship these representations with the thêmata of the Alter and the Ego, explaining the orientation of each representation.
