Abstract

In this article author tried to analyze a social role of academic peregrination in
the Banal Croatia in the mid nineteenth century. Training abroad was not only a
meaning of ascent in the society but also an important factor regarding the education
of the wealthy classes. Moreover, it was also an eligible requirement to succeed
in the bureaucracy or “clearance” for cultural transfer. Furthermore, author
also tried to demonstrate public activities of Croatian intellectuals educated abroad,
who promoted their ideas in liberal press in Zagreb (Saborske novine [Parliament
news], Slavenski Jug [Slavic South], Südslawische Zeitung [Southslavic News] and Jugoslavenske
novine [Yugoslav news]), in the period between 1849 and 1852. Under
the influence of the gained education these intellectuals published many articles and
critics regarding the contemporary circumstances in the Croatian society. They also
tried to transmit liberal ideas throughout Croatian lands, as well as they promoted
establishment of the civil society and a general modernization of Croatia. Regarding
this context, this article is a contribution to our knowledge about the Croatian
cultural and national identity.
