Abstract

The Magjer Collection was created during the first half of the 20th century by gathering heterogeneous historical works of art and works of applied art dating from the 16th century to the first half of the 20th century. The collection grew out of art collector Drago Magjer’s (Mostar, 1895 - Zagreb, 1979) love of history and art and his care for heritage preservation. The works became part of the Modern Gallery holdings in 2017 thanks to the donation of Elizabeta Rybak Budić, the heiress to the estate of Drago Magjer and Nada Ostrogović Magjer. Five early portrait plaques by Branislav Dešković, made in 1904-1905 in Venice, are an addition the sculptor’s works kept in the museum. The remaining six medals by various artists, dating from 1903 to 1936, are a permanent enrichment of the Collection of Medals and Plaques of the Modern Gallery.
