Abstract

This article describes the nature of second language writing as process-oriented and discusses the possibility of using the concept of scaffolding in addressing the difficulties of mastering such an important communicative aspect of a second language. The development of different approaches to second language learning and writing is described in the context of communicative competence. Next, the process approach to second language writing is described and discussed as a beneficial approach while considering the complexity of second language writing instruction. Finally, the concept of scaffolding is presented as a pedagogical tool in addressing the need for assistance and support in the process, but also as a factor in teacher-learner interaction that might be worth further research.
