Abstract

The attenuation coefficient of an electromagnetic surface wave is derived using a perturbation method which takes into account both collisional loss in the plasma and dielectric loss in the surrounding glass. The attenuation coefficient increases as the square of the phase coefficient in the region of low phase modes. The theory is compared with recent experimental observations.
