Abstract

In this paper I offer some reflections on this matter based on research into Croatian history during the period of late socialism. My research was focused on the history of the League of Communists of Croatia, its organization, methods of work and its relationship with other socio-political communities and socio-political organizations. In the context of claims with regard to the grand modernisation process, I believe that the second Yugoslavia was established on deceit, terror and lies; these were the three actual foundations of party government. The communists took over and maintained power through deceit, even though it is sometimes hard to draw the line between lies and deceit. Terror was the means of maintaining that power. Lies were the mythical image they built about themselves.
