Abstract
Joseph Roths Werk partizipiert an der wesentlichen Erfahrung der Kontingenz und der Problematik ihrer Bewältigung, die die Literatur der klassischen oder reflektierten Moderne der 1910er und 1920er Jahre als Folge der Erfahrungen des Ersten Weltkriegs prägt. Roth reflektiert den Verlust von Sinnstrukturen durch den Rekurs auf die Zeichenhaftigkeit der Welt; seine vermeintliche Rückkehr zu überkommenen, ›traditionellen‹ Erzählmodellen und Genres wird durch den Discours seines Erzählens unterlaufen, der in Strategien der Ambiguisierung und der Infragestellung des Erzählten mündet.
