Abstract

The antecedents of Hungarian environmental history research can be traced back to the 1980s. The first Hungarian historian to apply ecological viewpoints in her analyses was Ágnes R. Várkonyi. Hungarian environmental historians participated in the foundation of the European Society for Environmental History in 2001 and even served on the board of the Society. The social and natural scientists who were involved in Hungarian environmental history research have organized several conferences and published a number of study volumes and monographs for three decades. The researchers of Hungarian environmental history have achieved significant results and participated in international research as well. However, they haven’t been able to build up an institutional framework for environmental history research and education in the Hungarian university-academic world. An account of the first three decades of Hungarian environmental history research can best be written following the milestones of environmental history conferences and research volumes.
