Abstract

This paper examines how Péter Magyar and the Tisza Party constructed a counter-discourse to challenge the Orbán regime during the 2024 European Parliament election campaign. Drawing on a discourse-theoretical and rhetoric-performative approach, it analyses TikTok and Instagram videos collected through digital ethnography during the campaign period. The paper first outlines the political and communicative context of Tisza’s emergence, then analyzes four dimensions of the discourse: the communication sphere, the construction of the speaker, the core elements of the discourse, and its emotional dynamics. It argues that Tisza’s challenge rested not only on articulating new political topics but also on constructing a credible speaker and a mobilizing emotional repertoire.
