Abstract

We discuss culture as a property of the organization to which its members must adapt, as a multidimensional concept that encompasses many different ways of organizational life and patterns of behavior. All organizations within the framework of macrocultural conditions develop their own specific culture. Changes in society represent a challenge for the culture of an educational institution, related to learning, the student population, organizational management, rapid technological progress, or the changed role of women. Continuous change and co-construction of knowledge are based on the interpretation of organizational culture as a system whose functioning is complex, dynamic, and dependent on many interconnected variables, and culture is a value or way of life, the way we think about and develop a system of values. To provide a better insight into the complexity of the concept of organizational culture for the purposes of this paper, we analyze different definitions of culture, particularly organizational culture and its elements, through a review of the literature. To illustrate these concepts in practice, we have performed a brief analysis of the elements of organizational culture at the company DURAN d.d., Pula, Croatia, according to Schein’s three levels. We might call organizational culture a “social glue" that holds the group together with a shared vision, meaning, behavioral patterns, and values.
