Abstract

Computed tomography (CT) plays an important role in paediatric imaging due to its rapid acquisition, widespread availability, and high diagnostic value. At the same time, the increased sensitivity of children to ionising radiation requires particular attention to the justification of examinations and dose optimisation. The aim of this review was to summarise current evidence on the risks associated with exposure to ionising radiation during paediatric CT examinations and contemporary approaches to dose reduction. The literature indicates that advances in CT technology, the implementation of paediatric-specific protocols, automatic exposure control, iterative reconstruction techniques, and diagnostic reference levels enable reductions in radiation exposure while maintaining diagnostic image quality. Further risk reduction can be achieved through appropriate justification of each examination and adjustment of imaging protocols according to the child’s age and body size. Standardisation of procedures, implementation of international recommendations, and the professional expertise of radiographers are important for further improving radiation protection and patient safety in paediatric imaging.
