Abstract
European maritime industry is strongly affected by the globalization of world maritime market, and therefore it is necessary to strengthen its competitive position. The aim of this paper is to examine the potential for implementing maritime clusterisation in the European Union to increase the competitiveness of the European maritime industry. Clusters can improve the competitiveness of maritime activities and the maritime industry as a whole. The implementation of maritime clusterisation is useful for complex supply chain activities including the production and the services as well as the participation of small and medium enterprises. This paper examines the economic importance of the European maritime industry for the EU economy. The paper explores the cluster performance indicators to define the cluster facilitators. Cluster facilitators can serve as a basis for the adoption of an integrated policy at national or supranational level with an aim to strengthen the competitiveness of the maritime industry.
