Abstract

The topic of food in Croatian literature has rarely found itself in the focus of anthropological interest. Although food in Držić’s works is an important and meaningful topic, a resourceful device in accomplishing the comic effect, authenticity and plasticity of the dramatic world, it has attracted little scholarly attention. This article outlines the scope of the motifs pertaining to food and their use in the comedy Dundo Maroje, considers the influence of the Renaissance gastronomy on the menus described in the play, examines the difference in the eating habits and practice between the wealthy and lower social orders, and brings into focus the multiple layers and meanings of gastronomic themes which in Držić’s work mainly serve to amuse the audience but also to convey certain ethical messages.
