Abstract

In the course of 2001 a wooden crucifix dating from 16'1 century, normally exhibited in the Cathedral of the Assumption of Blessed Mary in Senj. was restored in the Croatian Institute for Conservation in Zagreb. During the investigation several paint layers were found among which the best preserved appeared to be the paint layer executed in 19,h century, probably in 1865, by the Italian painter, gilder and marbler Santo Barbieri. This layer of paint was cleaned and brought to surface. Some parts of the crucifix proved to belong to subsequent interventions, but they were nevertheless kept as part of the sculpture's history. A missing foot was reconstructed in resinous sawdust so that it can be recognised as a later intervention and as such, if necessary, removed.
