Abstract

This investigation relied upon the archival materials of the Court Trade Council and its subordinate service the Trade Intendance at Trieste who, from 1748 to 1776, implemented their mercantilist trade politics, known in Austrian and German version as a cameralistics. The author wonders how that economic system reflected on the economic life of Senj and Karlobag which, during the formation of the united economic space of all the Adriatic lands denominated "Litorale austriaco", were incorporated in it. The results of the investigation adduce to a conclusion that the main characteristic of the mercantilism was centralistic, uniform and controlled planning and leading of the economic politics from the Viennese headquarters without any cooperation either with the local population or regard to their regional local requirements and peculiarities. The economics were lead by the government employees, who did not stimulate any of private business. The inhabitants reacted to such a politics passively or by resistance. Nevertheless, the mercantilist projects were the ground works and preconditions for the economic undertakings, which could take place only after the abandonment of the mercantilist system.
