Abstract

SUMMARY: The paper studies bearings as the most common cause of failures in rotating, mechanical and electrical equipment and also the causes of explosions in industrial plants with explosive atmosphere made up of gases, vapours and dust particles. Presented is the incidence of failure in rotating equipment and the incidence of explosions, i.e. source of ignition in explosive atmosphere, in the context of a critical evaluation of the to-date methods of explosion protection. The presented incidence of failures in mechanical and electrical equipment and source of ignition in explosive atmosphere was arrived at by gathering relevant data in a number of industrial plants where explosive atmosphere is a threat.
