Abstract
The fish community in the River Sava, from Krško to Podsused, was investigated over a three-year period from 1978 - 1980, before the construction of the Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) Krško to determine its influence effects. Investigations included the catch structure of fish with various tools, in different seasons, at different water levels, as well as their ichthiological evaluation. The qualitative and quantitative components of the ichthiopopulation were determined, as well as the significance of some mixed ichthiopopulations, the fish diet and the ichthioproduction of this region. Up until the construction of the dam on the Sava and the beginning of work on the NPP Krško, this region had been rich in different components of mixed ichthiopopulations, which included 29 different species of fish, belonging to 9 families. The dominant species by number, ichthiomass and growth rate is the chub (Leuciscus cephalusu L). The investigated area is inhabited by transitory, lowland types of fish of open waters, that is, they belong to the typical region of the barbel with all the accompanying fish. Unfortunately, today after the building and operation of the NPP Krško, in monitoring studies of this part of the River Sava no ichthiological investigations are included, which would certainly be useful to undertake, considering the possibilities of the influence of thermal radiological and other influence on fish populations.
