Abstract

The ancient Greek polis of Pharia (Pharos) was established in 385 BC on the site of the present Stari Grad on the island of Hvar. An antique grid system with dry stone wall boundaries has been discovered in the plain surrounding the polis. The research presented in the paper has shown that the dominant grid system of Pharia was, most probably, the third out of four centuriations. Traces of three grids are visible in the territory of the polis and the surrounding plain, whereas the traces of the fourth grid are noticeable only in the polis.
