Abstract

The survey of the main directions of fish genetic research is presented in this paper. The chapters cover the fields of quantitative genetics, qualitative genetics and cytogenetics. Within each of these fields, different system of fish trait inheritance is being exemplified.
Fish genetics, which is one of the main domains in aquaculture research and whose full development awaits its proper moment in Croatia to be, is especially stressed. The components of qualitative genetics are exemplified - dominant and additive gene action, epistatsis, linkage and pleiotropy. Special consideration is given to the importance of using additive variance by means of selection and dominance variance by means of hybridization in aquaculture. The mistakes which can occur if the environmental variance and the variance of genetic - environmental interaction are not quite taken into account, are also explained.
Particular chapter is assigned to enormous development of cytogenetics. Fish karyotypes, sex determination and numerous cromosomal abberations are discussed. Specially important to aquaculture - the gynogenesis, poyploidy and other types of genetic engineering, are particularly explained.
