Archeology Research at Varaždin Fortification and »Bastion« Project

Abstract
The project »Bastion«, sponsored in part by European Union, which is currently a joint project of neighboring countries Slovenia, Hungary and Croatia, started off with research of archives in Maribor (Slovenia) and Varaždin (Croatia) and archeological excavations, aiming to gather relevant data on the two fortification systems. Both objects are Renaissance fortification systems, joined by a common denominator - Dominico de Lalio, chief architect in charge of military fortifications for hinterland Austria and Slavonnia-Croatia border. The major construction at Varaždin’s citadel was done in De Lalia’s time, until his death in 1563. The archeology research and excavations of Varaždin’s citadel were done at outside defense walls and the surrounding area. The author here presents the first results and data from field research that took part from early August to mid November 2006. Beside a great number of field data, which will help describe the fortification and life there (both inside the fortification and the town itself) in late Middle Ages to mid twentieth century, this research unveiled parts of outside defense structures: a stone wall segment - remains from town wall, destroyed in early nineteenth century, parts of wooden construction by the northern gothic tower, as well as the remains of a large defense building. We assume that the wooden construction elements date before the Renaissance of Varaždin burg. The goal of Bastion project is to use multidisciplinary approach and gather, process and systemize data of Renaissance object and use them further in cultural and tourist promotion and future services and offers of tourism, adding new quality to different cultures this region has embraced.
