Abstract

Police procedures involving persons with diplomatic immunity are uncommon, but when they occur, the security of other people must be protected while the privileges and immunities granted to diplomatic personnel should be respected. It is important that the police officer correctly identifies which person is, according to interna-tional law, entitled to diplomatic immunity. At ali times the police officers have to be aware of the range of the immunities each person has and the consequent implications this has. However police officers should prioritise the security of other people if endangeredby acts of a person with diplomatic immunity. The first part of the article reviews the various types of diplomatic immunity. Part two is concerned with how to identify the persons with immunity and the last part elaborates on what the police procedures should be.
