Abstract

North-west croatia met difficulties entering the world of modern railway traffic. Some of already designed lines have never been built and some are currently being closed as they aren’t profitable. But a railroad line that is not profitable enough simply does not exist. Rail transport follows immediately after water transport by its low prices and comes first speaking of safety. It is used to transfer goods and humans and also provides opportunities for the export of raw materials. Back in 1870 Križevci was granted privilege to be on the main Hungarian railway Zakany-Zagreb, which reached Rijeka in 1873. Bjelovar junction was realized in 1894, whereas connection to Varaždin has never been made despite the fact that the railroad Varaždin-Križevci-Bjelovar and further on eastward through Bilogora to Vukovar was seen as part of an important line. Only half-carried out plans influenced economic and demographic development of the entire area which could not advance as a whole due to the lack of railroads.
