Abstract

Several legends and beliefs were recorded in the course of investigating life-cycle and calendar customs. The best known is the legend about vampire Pankogulo Badurina. Two others are on the Maić-devil, ie. a spirit of a child who died un-baptised and molested the islanders in many ways, and on a smart priest who guarded people from devil on their way back from the vineyards, and got grapes in return. The beliefs recorded by authors include stories about spirits of the dead walking about and teasing Silbljani, about sacred trees which nobody dares to tear down, and about witches.
