Abstract

The paper discusses a changing concept of literacy, based on the contemporary social and technological development, and the status of new literacy in the primary school curriculum. Literacy has always served a certain social purpose and nowadays it enables global communication. Apart from being a means of achieving goals of a society, its value is evident in an individual’s self actualisation process in a democratic society. Primary schools have a leading role in the development of literacy and therefore its place in the school curriculum needs to be redefined and updated, bearing in mind the contemporary findings of the new literacy studies.
The article focuses on the reading skill which, along with writing, represents a crucial component of literacy. The position of literacy in various school curricula has been analysed – in National Curriculum Framework, school curriculum and teaching curriculum. The intention was to rethink the notion of the new literacy/literacies and the existing response of education to the contemporary changes.
