Abstract

The work presents the results of the Programme International Student Assessment-PISA 2006 survey in Croatia conducted by the international Consortium of the Institutions of OECD countries. It tested knowledge and skills of three knowledge and skills of three domains: reading, mathematical and scientific literacy with an emphasis on the latter which was the major research domain. According to the statistics, Croatian is dehind the average results of the OECD countries in all three domains. The best results achieved by the Croatian 15-year-olds were in scientific literacy, then follows the reading literacy, and the worst results were achieved in mathematical literacy. The results indicate the lack of educational politics and the demand for the curriculum modernization through competence approach. Considering the fact that the reform of the education is in progress, future studies will show its successfulness in preparing students for further education or work.
