Abstract

Since the first appearance of television in the mid-twentieth century, its ratings, frequency and impact have been increasing constantly. Until the 1980s social studies were mostly undirectional pointing out only the implicit theory of the way we watch television. However, in recent years the need for detailed scientific research of not only the way we watch television, but also the impact of its content on the so-called 'risky group' of preschoolers, has been increasing. Although it is still a quite unexplored area, numerous studies have indicated the correlation between the mass media and children, especially when discussing the impact of television on children's cognitive development. The aim of this study is to point out the results of the previous researches, as well as to offer a possible solution of this phenomenon. The emphasis is, however, placed on the observation of three-year-olds’ exposure to television programs which, if adjusted to their age with educational content, can directly influence their cognitive skills as well as their future success in education. On the other hand, children’s exposure to television programs, whose purpose is just a mere pastime, is associated with the underdevelopment of cognitive and other skills, including a poor success in education at a particular level of a child’s development. The importance of introducing the media education and literacy to children and adults is at this point the only possible solution to this problem.
