Abstract

The purpose of this work is to point out the importance of the period between the end of the eighteenth and the beggining of the nineteenth century in maritime-commercial relations on the Adriatic coast. The emphasis is laid on Dalmatian ports which had both social and economic role in that period. On the one hand they represented a link between the eastern Adriatic coast including its hinterland and big Adriatic ports, and on the other a place of inter-cultural connectedness of different provenances. Finally, we can come to a conclusion that maritime-commercial connections across the Adriatic were deep-seated and survived one of the greatest challenges during the Napoleonic wars. In the development of this work an exhaustive bibliography and printed material has been used with the application of the comparative-historical research method, presented in the comparison of periods and of ports and cities.
