Abstract

The orientation of society to „a knowledge society“ has resulted in changes in the educational system, in abandoning the traditional system of education based on teaching plans and programs and in introducing a curricular approach based on developing students’ competences. By shifting the focus of action of modern school, the orientation of the teaching process, the changing role of the teacher from information-giver to supporter of the student in developing his/her competences. This changed role, from mere implementer to co-creator of the curriculum, requires new competences for the teacher as well. Their number and variety presupposes a structured continuous program of professional development which will follow the teacher in all stages of his/her profession (initial education, induction period, continuous professional development) and provide support for teachers in facing new demands. Teachers can contribute considerably to the development of their profession and to quality implementation of the National Curriculum as well as to the development of Croatian education as a whole by making use of all the segments of professional development and lifelong learning, by means of clearly defined teaching standards.
