Abstract

This paper deals with the concept of critical thinking and its various roles, in particular its role in higher education. The paper gives various definitions of the concept and discusses the importance of critical thinking in different aspects of life, especially in education. Measuring critical thinking is a very complex process, where the reliability of such measurement is difficult to achieve to a satisfactory degree. However, several available applicable methods are mentioned in the paper. The importance of critical thinking is undisputable and should, therefore, be developed in pupils and students. However, former research on the development of critical thinking has not provided unequivocal results. Nevertheless, the majority of those very familiar with the concept claim that critical thinking can be developed, and this paper describes procedures
which have yielded the best results. A brief explanation is also given of the close connection between critical thinking and writing in expressing, measuring and teaching.
