Abstract
The starting point of this article represents one of the fundamental problems in contemporary schools: discipline. This paper shows why issues concerning the establishment and maintenance of discipline in schools deserve special attention. We based the study on both fundamental objectives of discipline – short and long term. As an important starting point in establishing and maintaining discipline, we emphasized the importance of preventive action and active participation by students. The value of prevention is reflected in the fact that it helps to prevent disciplinary problems; this is more effective than elimination of problems that have already occurred. Active participation of students not only plays an important role in the development of students’ autonomy and responsibility but also provides them with practical experience for living in a democratic society.
