Abstract

The European language policy promotes learner autonomy in foreign
language learning, since it is an important factor in successful foreign language
acquisition. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the link between learner
autonomy in learning foreign languages and European language policy tools for
developing key features of learner autonomy, such as the Common European
Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) and the European Language
Portfolio (ELP). This paper presents in detail the main features of learner autonomy
in foreign language learning, the roles of students and teachers in learner autonomy
and the structure and purpose of CEFRL and ELP. It is our conclusion that CEFRL
encourages learner autonomy in areas of self-evaluation, autonomous setting of
learner goals, choice and usage of language materials and emphasis on the importance
of foreign language use.
